Volunteers and Captains at Work

Firefighting in the 1950's in a small community was not a fancy high-tech job as is today.
Sometimes a fireman would arrive on the scene to help and not even wear his helmet.
As a youngster watching many fires in Charleston from the 1950's on, I never thought a lot about the imminent danger and the harm of smoke on the throat and lungs.  In the end, I do believe the smoke from fires is what caused my dad, Mel Taylor, to have such a short life.

1952 was a rough year for the tiny Charleston Fire Department.  Many fires were stopped before turning into total disasters.  Some, as the Alexander Department Store fire were just too much for the men and their old equipment.
