January, 1952 Mutual aid to Mattoon on

 an explosion disaster

May 7,1952 The Alexander Department

 Store Fire; Snyder Furniture fire; bad

electrical storm

May 25,1952- Dorsey Crail residential explosion

October, 1952- Turner & Taylor attend

Peoria convention

February 27, 1953- New truck-the quad-

arrives & is put into service

July 17, 1953- Mayor Closson says new

 minimum fire & police salary law causes

 "a mess" for city

September 11, 1953- Pay raises to at least

$300.00 monthly for firemen & policemen

 raises dander of council

February 13, 1954- Mayor Closson

announces that Charleston has met all "8"

requirements or recommendations of the

Insurance Bureau- Insurance rates should

go down

February 27, 1953- Quad arrives; veranda

 on front of fire-house removed to allow for

 truck to enter & exit building

 

 

March 1,1955- Chief John Turner retires

 

after 23 years of service with the

 

department (1932-55)

May 25,1955 Harold Fleming appointed

Assistant Chief

June 11,1955- Nickel Plate butane tank fire;

burned for days

December 19, 1955 Waymon Shoot

Grocery in Ashmore burns (-4 degrees)

October 20,1955 Mattoon hosts the

annual Fire Convention, Charleston men

attend

January 6,1956 Leonard Ward appointed

fireman

March 1, 1956- George Milliner Appointed

Assistant Chief

June, 1957- Fire College attended at

 Rantoul-Chanute Air Force Base; firemen

 there gave demonstration; Tom Michaels,

 Leonard Ward, George Milliner, Melvin

Taylor & boys attend

August 25, 1957- John Boyd Implement
