Up until the horses, the heavy Babcock would be hand pulled by volunteer firemen and city officials.  The old fire bell would sound and all would attend to getting the fire wagon out and to the scene. 

Notice that the firehouse front did not have its'  veranda in these early years. 


An early building collapse on the southwest corner of the square.  the Babcock with its' too draft horses are travelling by it.  The firehouse would be about 1/2 block on the left.
