VICE PRESIDENT GERALD FORD VISIT CHARLESTON AND EIU, MAY, 1974

VICE-PRESIDENT FORD VISITS EIU

May 19, 1974 was a historical day for Charleston. A future President made a visit to the University. No one knew that
a short time later he would be our President. CFD firemen had the honor of baby-sitting (guarding) for the limousine
parked at Station #2. The limousine was brought down from Decatur.  The Vice- President was going to travel the 12 mile trip to and from the Coles County
Airport in the limousine. The Vice-President flew in on a small Boeing plane. After arriving into Charleston, Mr. Ford spoke to all at Lantz Gymnasium.

PILOT HAS TROUBLE LANDING

Ford was in Coles County for just over two hours.  His departure was delayed for 15-20 minutes because another aircraft was approaching the airport with landing clearance, a spokesman for Co-Air said.
The other pilot was advised of the official plane and voluntarily changed his route and didn't land.
