CHARLESTON FIRE DEPARTMENT BIG CHANGE IN 1967
Finally, the City of Charleston would
make a break through in getting a piece of equipment to
handle the ten story high-rise buildings on campus.
The 100 foot aerial ladder would certainly have helped
int he earlier Rardin building fire, but as proven in
the Walker's Grocery fire, the ladder truck does not
automatically douse every fire. The men on the
ground manning the lines were the ones who could hit the
heart of the fire. In the picture on the left we
can see Capt. Mel Taylor on top the ladder truck
installing new bulbs in the lights at Trojan Hill
(Charleston High School) football field.
