CAPTAIN TAYLOR ATTENDS CHICAGO ARSON SEMINAR

THREE DAY SEMINAR: CAUSE AND ORIGIN OF FIRE AND EXPLOSIONS

Captain Mel Taylor "was always interested in expanding his knowledge. He was sent in August of 1962 (15th through the 17th) to attend this large seminar at the huge McCormick Place in downtown Chicago. He used to tell the story of how Mayor Daley entered the hall with a guard of Chicago firemen. Mayor Daley greeted the group of firemen at Wednesday's opening session, saying "this constructive exchange of ideas cannot help but make better public officials of all of you." Professors from five universities, insurance adjusters, police chiefs and firemen were included in the lecture program.

MORE THAN 600 VISITING FIREMEN MEET

Chicago hosted 600 firefighters in the first seminar of its kind in the country. More than 600 visiting firemen from 50 states, Canada and Australia met attend a brand new school Thursday in McCormick Place. They were studying the "Origins and Causes of Fire and Explosions" in a three-day seminar presented jointly by Illinois Fire Marshal William D. Cowhey and Chicago Fire Commissioner Robert J. Quinn. It was the first such seminar ever conducted on a national scale, according to Chairman John Kennedy. Captain Taylor of the CFD received a certificate and large book for participation in this event.
