THE FIRE HORSES OF SAN FRANCISCO, THE STANDARD OF FIRE HORSES AND DRIVERS

FIRE HORSES were actually slow being adopted in the small town of Charleston, Illinois.  I the beginning years of the department up until into the 20th Century, the fire carts, including the Babcock Fire Wagon were pulled by volunteers and city officers.  The Fire of the Old Central School (Charleston High School) on Jefferson Street in 1878 would have the volunteers and others pulling the carts several blocks.
